CGAP and the Drug Free Communities Grant – What’s the connection?

CGAP was started in 2005, when a group of community members and leaders came together in the wake of a marked increase in gang activity.  Between 2005 and 2011, CGAP and its many members worked together to provide gang, violence and drug prevention programs to the students in the Fort Bragg Unified School District.  CGAP members were also instrumental in creating public forums to discuss the emerging gang issues and provided speakers with expertise in gang and drug prevention and intervention.

CGAP had many other success during those six years, among them two fantastic Celebrating Safe Communities events and the writing of a community manifesto which was embraced by many public and private entities.  What many people do not know is that until October of 2011 CGAP had no funding of its own. All of these accomplishments were made possible by the volunteer work of CGAP members and the budgets of the participating organizations.

In early 2011 the opportunity to apply for a federal Drug Free Communities grant was presented to CGAP.  The members quickly agreed that this was an important occasion and should not be missed.  After many hours of volunteer work on the part of many members a comprehensive application was written and submitted.  In September of 2011, the happy news arrived that the Fort Bragg Coalition for Gang Awareness and Prevention had been selected as one of the lucky few recipients of the $125,000 per year grant.  This funding allows CGAP to be more organized, connected and effective in community-wide prevention.  A positive step towards our mission of preventing youth drug use and gang involvement indeed.
